Bomarea edulis was already described and the name validly published by François Richard de Tussac. It was not until 1837, however, that William Herbert reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Bomarea edulis is a species in the genus Bomarea which contains 120 species and belongs to the family of the Alstroemeriaceae (Peruvian-lily Family).
