Bolbitis nicotianifolia was already described and the name validly published by Olof Swartz. It was not until 1932, however, that Arthur Hugh Garfit Alston reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Bolbitis nicotianifolia is a species in the genus Bolbitis (creepingfern, a common name also used for Odontosoria ) which contains 69 species and belongs to the family of the Lomariopsidaceae (Lomaria Family).
