Bartonia paniculata ssp. paniculata was already described and the name validly published by André Michaux. It was not until some time later, however, that Gotthilf Henry Ernest Muhlenberg reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Bartonia paniculata ssp. paniculata is a subspecies in the genus Bartonia (screwstem) which contains 4 species and belongs to the family of the Gentianaceae (Gentian Family).
