Aristolochia cordifolia was already described by José Celestino Bruno Mutis but it was not until 1911 that the name was validly published by Karl Sigismund Kunth.

Aristolochia cordifolia is a species in the genus Aristolochia (Dutchman's pipe) which contains 300 species and belongs to the family of the Aristolochiaceae (Birthwort Family).
