Ampelopsis megalophylla was already described and the name validly published by John Gould Veitch. It was not until 1900, however, that Friedrich Ludwig Emil Diels and Ernest Friedrich Gilg reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Ampelopsis megalophylla is a species in the genus Ampelopsis (peppervine) which contains 25 species and belongs to the family of the Vitaceae (Grape Family).

The climbers grow to a height of approximately 10 meters.

Ampelopsis megalophylla is a decidious plant with bipinnate leaves. The leaves are arranged opposite one another. They are elliptic with toothed margins.

The flowers are green. The plants bloom from May to August. The flowers are arranged in cymes.
The fruits are berries and very ornamental. They develop in summer.

Ampelopsis megalophylla is native to west China.

Ampelopsis megalophylla prefers a sunny to half shady site and can withstand temperatures down to -23,3º C. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil, sandy clay soil that is moderately moist to moist.
