Ampelopsis brevipedunculata var. maximowiczii was already described and the name validly published by Eduard August von Regel. It was not until 1921, however, that Alfred Rehder reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Ampelopsis brevipedunculata var. maximowiczii is a variety in the genus Ampelopsis (peppervine) which contains 25 species and belongs to the family of the Vitaceae (Grape Family).

The climbers grow to a height of approximately 5 meters.
