Ampelodesmos mauritanicus was already described and the name validly published by Jean Louis Marie Poiret. It was not until 1894, however, that Thomas Duncan and Hans Schinz reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Ampelodesmos mauritanicus is a species in the genus Ampelodesmos (Mauritanian grass) which belongs to the family of the Poaceae (Grass Family).
