Amomum villosum var. xanthioides was already described and the name validly published by John Gilbert Baker, based on a prior description by Nathaniel Wallich. It was not until 1978, however, that Te Lin Wu and Sen Jen Chen reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Amomum villosum var. xanthioides is a variety in the genus Amomum (cardamom) which contains 175 species and belongs to the family of the Zingiberaceae (Blackboy Family).
