Amaranthus hypochondriacus was described in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus. The name is considered as validly published.

The Prince's Feather is a species in the genus Amaranthus (amaranth) which contains 60 species and belongs to the family of the Amaranthaceae (Amaranth Family).

The plants grow to a height of approximately 1,2 meters.
