Allium howellii var. sanbenitense was already described and the name validly published by Hamilton Paul Traub. It was not until 1972, however, that Francis Marion Ownbey and Hannah Caroline Aase reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Allium howellii var. sanbenitense is a variety in the genus Allium (onion) which contains 824 species and belongs to the family of the Alliaceae (Garlic Family).
