Allium carinatum ssp. pulchellum (= Allium cirrhosum, Allium flavum var. pulchellum, Allium pulchellum) belongs to the group of bulbous and tuberous plants.

Allium carinatum ssp. pulchellum was already described and the name validly published by George Don. It was not until 1894, however, that Gaston Eugène Marie Bonnier and Georges de Layens reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Allium carinatum ssp. pulchellum is a subspecies in the genus Allium (onion) which contains 824 species and belongs to the family of the Alliaceae (Garlic Family).

The plants grow to a height of approximately 0,45 meters.

Allium carinatum ssp. pulchellum is a decidious plant with simple leaves. The leaves appear at the base of the plant. They are mid green and linear with entire margins.

Allium carinatum ssp. pulchellum is native to France, Italy, Central Europe, the Balkan Peninsula, Eastern Europe, northern Turkey and the Caucasus.

Allium carinatum ssp. pulchellum prefers a sunny site and can withstand temperatures down to -17,7º C. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil, sandy clay soil that is dry to moderately moist.
