Allium constrictum was already described and the name validly published by Francis Marion Ownbey and Mingrone. It was not until 1988, however, that Pedro Luis Pérez de Paz, C.R. Annable and Loren H. Rieseberg reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Allium constrictum is a species in the genus Allium (onion) which contains 824 species and belongs to the family of the Alliaceae (Garlic Family).
