Allamanda cathartica was described in 1771 by Carl Linnaeus. The name is considered as validly published.

The Golden Trumpet is a species in the genus Allamanda which contains 14 species and belongs to the family of the Apocynaceae (Dogbane Family).

The climbers grow to a height of approximately 16 meters.

Allamanda cathartica is an evergreen plant with simple leaves. The leaves are arranged in whorls. They are lanceolate with entire margins.
