Aira caryophyllea ssp. multiculmis was already described and the name validly published by Barthélemy Charles Joseph Dumortier. It was not until some time later, however, that Charles Marie Joseph Mathieu reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Aira caryophyllea ssp. multiculmis is a subspecies in the genus Aira (hairgrass, a common name also used for Rostraria and Vahlodea ) which contains 10 species and belongs to the family of the Poaceae (Grass Family).

Aira caryophyllea ssp. multiculmis is native to France, Switzerland, Corsica, the Iberian Peninsula, Sicily and Malta and Algeria.

Aira caryophyllea ssp. multiculmis prefers a sunny to half shady site and can withstand temperatures down to -23,3º C. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil, sandy clay soil that is moderately moist.
