Agrostis capillaris was described in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus. The name is considered as validly published.

The Common Bent is a species in the genus Agrostis (bentgrass) which contains 220 species and belongs to the family of the Poaceae (Grass Family).

Agrostis capillaris is native to the whole of Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, north Iran, west Sibiria, east Sibiria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Tunesia and the Canary Islands and is naturalized in North-, South- and Central-America, Greenland, South-Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

The Common Bent prefers a sunny site and can withstand temperatures down to -34,4º C. It grows best in soils that are moderately moist. The plants are only slightly drought tolerant. They will do moderately well in anaerobic soils and are moderately tolerant of limy conditions.
