Agathosma betulina was already described and the name validly published by Bengt Bergius. It was not until 1950, however, that Fedor Semenovich Pilipenko reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

The Round Buchu is a species in the genus Agathosma which contains 135 species and belongs to the family of the Rutaceae (Rue Family).
