Achnatherum occidentale ssp. occidentale was already described and the name validly published by George Thurber. It was not until some time later, however, that Mary Elizabeth Barkworth reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Achnatherum occidentale ssp. occidentale is a subspecies in the genus Achnatherum (needlegrass) which belongs to the family of the Poaceae (Grass Family).

The plants grow to a height of approximately 1 meter.They grow at a moderate rate and have a moderate lifespan.
