Achnatherum lettermanii was already described and the name validly published by George Vasey. It was not until some time later, however, that Mary Elizabeth Barkworth reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Achnatherum lettermanii is a species in the genus Achnatherum (needlegrass) which belongs to the family of the Poaceae (Grass Family).

The plants grow to a height of approximately 1 meter.They grow at a slow rate and have a moderate lifespan.
