Achnatherum hymenoides was already described and the name validly published by Johann Jakob Roemer and Josef August Schultes. It was not until some time later, however, that Mary Elizabeth Barkworth reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Achnatherum hymenoides is a species in the genus Achnatherum (needlegrass) which belongs to the family of the Poaceae (Grass Family).
