Achimenes mexicana was already described and the name validly published by Berthold Carl Seemann. It was not until 1768, however, that Karl Fritsch reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics based on a prior description by George Bentham and Joseph Dalton Hooker.

Achimenes mexicana is a species in the genus Achimenes (cupid's bower) which contains 25 species and belongs to the family of the Gesneriaceae (Gesneriad Family).
