Achimenes heterophylla was already described and the name validly published by Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius. It was not until 1788, however, that Augustin Pyramus de Candolle reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Achimenes heterophylla is a species in the genus Achimenes (cupid's bower) which contains 25 species and belongs to the family of the Gesneriaceae (Gesneriad Family).
