Achimenes glabrata was already described and the name validly published by Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini. It was not until 1808, however, that Karl Fritsch reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Achimenes glabrata is a species in the genus Achimenes (cupid's bower) which contains 25 species and belongs to the family of the Gesneriaceae (Gesneriad Family).
