Achillea millefolium var. californica was already described and the name validly published by Charles Louis Pollard. It was not until some time later, however, that Willis Linn Jepson reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Achillea millefolium var. californica is a variety in the genus Achillea (yarrow) which contains 85 species and belongs to the family of the Asteraceae (Aster Family).
