Achillea distans was already described by Franz de Paula Adam von Waldstein and Pál Kitaibel but it was not until 1803 that the name was validly published by Carl Ludwig von Willdenow.

The Tall Yarrow is a species in the genus Achillea (yarrow) which contains 85 species and belongs to the family of the Asteraceae (Aster Family).
