Acer saccharum ssp. nigrum was already described and the name validly published by François André Michaux. It was not until 1952, however, that Yves Desmarais reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

The Black Sugar Maple is a subspecies in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).

Acer saccharum ssp. nigrum is a decidious plant with simple leaves. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stems. They are palmately lobed.

The flowers are five-petaled. The plants bloom in April. The flowers are arranged in corymbs.
The fruits are schizocarps.

Acer saccharum ssp. nigrum is native to east Canada, the Northeast of the US and the central Northeast of the US.
