Acer rubrum var. drummondii was already described and the name validly published by Thomas Nuttall, based on a prior description by William Jackson Hooker and George Arnott Walker Arnott. It was not until 1884, however, that Charles Sprague Sargent reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

The Drummond Maple is a variety in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).
