Acer pectinatum ssp. maximowiczii was already described and the name validly published by Ferdinand Albin Pax. It was not until 1977, however, that Edouard Muret reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acer pectinatum ssp. maximowiczii is a subspecies in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).
