Acer negundo var. californicum was already described and the name validly published by John Torrey and Asa Gray. It was not until 1891, however, that Charles Sprague Sargent reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acer negundo var. californicum is a variety in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).
