The Painted Maple is a variety in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).

The trees grow to a height of approximately 12 meters and have a rounded to broadly spreading shape.

Acer mono ssp. mono var. mono is a decidious plant with simple leaves. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stems. They are mid green and palmately lobed. The foliage colour in autumn is yellow.

The flowers are five-petaled. The plants bloom from April to May. The flowers are arranged in umbels.

The fruits are schizocarps.
