Acer cappadocicum ssp. lobelii was already described and the name validly published by Michele Tenore. It was not until 1982, however, that Edouard Muret reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

The Lobel's Maple is a subspecies in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).

The trees grow to a height of approximately 20 meters and have a narrowly columnar shape.

Acer cappadocicum ssp. lobelii is a decidious plant with simple leaves. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stems. They are dark green and palmately lobed.

The flowers are five-petaled. The plants bloom in May. The flowers are arranged in umbels.
The fruits are schizocarps.
