Acer davidii ssp. grosseri was already described and the name validly published by Ferdinand Albin Pax. It was not until 1994, however, that P.C. de Jong reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acer davidii ssp. grosseri is a subspecies in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).

The trees grow to a height of approximately 10 meters and have a rounded to broadly spreading shape.

Acer davidii ssp. grosseri is a decidious plant with simple leaves. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stems. They are mid green and ovate. The foliage colour in autumn is yellow bis orange.

The flowers are five-petaled and yellow. The plants bloom from April to May. The flowers are arranged in racemes.
The fruits are schizocarps.
