Acer glabrum var. neomexicanum was already described and the name validly published by Edward Lee Greene. It was not until 1939, however, that Thomas Henry Kearney and Robert Hibbs Peebles reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acer glabrum var. neomexicanum is a variety in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).
