Acer glabrum var. diffusum was already described and the name validly published by Edward Lee Greene. It was not until 1921, however, that Frank Jason Smiley reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acer glabrum var. diffusum is a variety in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).
