Acer glabrum ssp. douglasii was already described and the name validly published by William Jackson Hooker. It was not until 1890, however, that Alfred Wesmael reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acer glabrum ssp. douglasii is a subspecies in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).

The trees grow to a height of approximately 9 meters.They grow at a moderate rate and have a moderate lifespan.

Acer glabrum ssp. douglasii is native to Alaska, west Canada, the Northwest of the US and the Rocky Mountains.

Acer glabrum ssp. douglasii prefers a shady site and can withstand temperatures down to -28,2º C. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil. The plants are only slightly drought tolerant. They will not grow in anaerobic soils and are only slightly tolerant of limy conditions.
