Acer circinatum was described in 1814 by Frederick Traugott Pursh. The name is considered as validly published.

The Vine Maple is a species in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).

The trees grow to a height of approximately 6 meters and have a rounded to broadly spreading shape. They grow at a moderate rate and have a long lifespan.

Acer circinatum is a decidious plant with simple leaves. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stems. They are mid green and palmately lobed with serrate margins. The foliage colour in autumn is brilliant orange bis brilliant red.

The flowers are five-petaled and green. The plants bloom from March to May. The flowers are arranged in umbels.

The brown fruits are schizocarps. They develop in summer.

Acer circinatum is native to Alaska, Washington, Oregon and north California.

The Vine Maple prefers a half schady site and can withstand temperatures down to -28,2º C. It grows best in sandy or pebbly, loamy soil that is moist. The plants are only slightly drought tolerant. They will not grow in anaerobic soils and do not tolerate limy conditions.
