Acer caudatum ssp. ukurunduense was already described and the name validly published by Ernst Rudolf von Trautvetter and Carl Anton von Meyer. It was not until 1966, however, that Edouard Muret reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acer caudatum ssp. ukurunduense is a subspecies in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).
