Acer stachyophyllum ssp. betulifolium was already described and the name validly published by Carl Johann Maximowicz. It was not until 1994, however, that P.C. de Jong reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acer stachyophyllum ssp. betulifolium is a subspecies in the genus Acer (maple) which contains 111 species and belongs to the family of the Aceraceae (Maple Family).
