Acanthus hirsutus ssp. syriacus was already described and the name validly published by Pierre Edmond Boissier. It was not until some time later, however, that Richard Kenneth Brummitt reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acanthus hirsutus ssp. syriacus is a subspecies in the genus Acanthus (bear's breeches) which contains 30 species and belongs to the family of the Acanthaceae (Acanthus Family).

The perennials grow to a height of approximately 0,6 meters and have a stemless habit.
