Acacia tortilis ssp. spirocarpa was already described and the name validly published by Achille Richard, based on a prior description by Christian Ferdinand Friedrich Hochstetter. It was not until some time later, however, that John Patrick Micklethwait Brenan reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acacia tortilis ssp. spirocarpa is a subspecies in the genus Acacia (wattle) which contains 1200 species and belongs to the family of the Fabaceae (Legume Family).
