Acacia tortilis ssp. heteracantha was already described and the name validly published by William John Burchell. It was not until some time later, however, that John Patrick Micklethwait Brenan reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Acacia tortilis ssp. heteracantha is a subspecies in the genus Acacia (wattle) which contains 1200 species and belongs to the family of the Fabaceae (Legume Family).
