Acacia abyssinica was already described by Christian Ferdinand Friedrich Hochstetter but it was not until 1846 that the name was validly published by George Bentham.

Acacia abyssinica is a species in the genus Acacia (wattle) which contains 1200 species and belongs to the family of the Fabaceae (Legume Family).
