Abronia fragrans was already described by Thomas Nuttall but it was not until 1853 that the name was validly published by William Jackson Hooker.

Abronia fragrans is a species in the genus Abronia (sand verbena) which contains 35 species and belongs to the family of the Nyctaginaceae (Four o'clock Family).
