Deuterocohnia brevifolia was already described and the name validly published by August Heinrich Rudolf Grisebach. It was not until 1992, however, that Michael A. Spencer reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Deuterocohnia brevifolia is a species in the genus Deuterocohnia which contains 17 species and belongs to the family of the Bromeliaceae (Bromeliad Family).
