Abildgaardia ovata was already described and the name validly published by Nicolaas Laurens Burman. It was not until 1971, however, that Robert Kral reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Abildgaardia ovata is a species in the genus Abildgaardia (sedge, a common name also used for Carex ) which belongs to the family of the Cyperaceae (Sedge Family).
