Abies kawakamii was already described and the name validly published by Bunzô Hayata. It was not until 1909, however, that Tokutarô Itô reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

The Formosan Fir is a species in the genus Abies (fir) which contains 48 species and belongs to the family of the Pinaceae (Pine Family).
