Abies fargesii var. faxoniana was already described and the name validly published by Alfred Rehder and Ernest Henry Wilson. It was not until 1971, however, that Tang Shui Liu reclassified it into todays valid botanical systematics.

Abies fargesii var. faxoniana is a variety in the genus Abies (fir) which contains 48 species and belongs to the family of the Pinaceae (Pine Family).
